EPISODE 3 - STUDENT OF THE GAME

Another Point to Prove…

When you tell people that you’re a rapper, their minds are not immediately pointed to education. When most people hear about someone being a “Rapper”, there’s negative connotations associated with the title. It indicates a history of crime, violence or glorification of consumerism and capitalism.

To a degree, I understand the assumption…

When television, radio and blogs map out this image of a rapper, you’re naturally going to believe that this is the only image that is marketable or connected to the experience of a rapper. It’s an incredible struggle finding your voice as an Artist when you don’t want to follow this formula. You don’t want to extend the legacy of this image when you want better for the world to see. You want to address your surroundings with love and guidance. You want to show the people who support you or even look up to you that what you see does not need to be what you are.

I’m prepared to be a positive light for my family, my city and the larger Hip Hop community as a whole. The world is looking for Artists and Businesspeople to cheer on and see themselves within their journey. That’s why I’ve decided to get my MBA at Purdue University.

I grew up in a household where the standard was Business and Education. There was no other choice, admittedly. From a young age, I knew that I would eventually go to College and get my Bachelor’s Degree. Before I got to College, I knew I wanted to get into the competitive sport of Rapping. So when I got to school, I was struggling mentally with the idea of being in school when all of the people I saw as sources of light had all dropped out of school. “How can I be an Artist in school when Nas didn’t have to do that? Kendrick didn’t do it. Kanye’s first album is called COLLEGE DROPOUT. There’s no way!” Through it all, I learned that my path to success in Hip Hop was going to run concurrently with my educational journey so that I could show people that the two coexists and are in alignment with each other.

This path to my Masters Degree is for that kid in High School who often wonders if they can be successful in music while getting their degree. I’m honored to have been accepted into Purdue and hope that my education inspires as much as the music!

“Imagine a Rapper getting his Masters”

It’s showtime! 🚂
